New to Yoga?

Everything you need to know before your first class at Middle River Yoga 🌊

Thinking about trying yoga but not sure what to expect? You're not alone!

Starting something new can feel intimidating, especially when you aren't sure what to wear, whether you'll be able to do the poses, or if you'll fit in. At Middle River Yoga, we believe yoga is for everybody and every body. You don't need experience, flexibility, or fancy equipment to get started.

Here's what we'd love for you to know before your first class at the studio.

You don't need to be flexible

Seriously! You don't have to touch your toes, balance on one leg, or twist yourself into a funky & uncomfortable shape. Yoga is a practice that meets you where you are. With time, you might start to feel improvements in your mobility, strength, and balance, but there's no finish line to reach. And what a gift that is! This really is the practice of a lifetime.

There's no such thing as being "good" at yoga

You might forget which foot goes where. You might need to look around to see what everyone else is doing. You might need a break. (Don’t worry, even your teacher will get confused from time-to-time).

All of that is completely normal. Yoga isn't about performing perfectly or keeping up with the person next to you. It's an opportunity to connect with your body, your breath, and the present moment, just as it is.

What should you bring?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Bring some water, and arrive a few minutes early so you can get settled, get acquainted to the space, and meet your teacher.

We have yoga props to help support your practice. You don't need to invest in anything special before your first class.

Which class should you try?

If you're just getting started, we suggest trying Zen, Balanced Flow, or Wind Down. If you enjoy movement and a little more flow, Energize is a great vinyasa-style class. Still not quite sure? Reach out, we would love to help you find the right class for you.

You can always take a break

Resting is part of yoga, too. Arguably one of the most important parts. At any time, you can pause, modify a pose, or ask your teacher for help. Your practice belongs to you, and you never have to push through something that doesn't feel right. In fact, we’d rather you don’t…

Come as you are

At Middle River Yoga, we're here to help you feel welcome, supported, and at home in your practice. You don't need to know everything before you walk through the door. Showing up is enough.
